Nitric Oxide Suppressant Drug? Beware!

Today, we’re diving deep into a topic that affects many: acid reflux medications known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

The findings from a recent study caught my attention; honestly, you should know about it. 

The study indicated that people who take PPIs for more than 4½ years might be at a higher risk of dementia than those who don’t. Let’s be clear: the study doesn’t say that PPIs directly cause dementia. But the connection? It’s noteworthy and something I believe we should all be aware of.

These drugs curb stomach acid by zeroing in on enzymes that produce it. And while they can be beneficial for managing acid reflux, prolonged use has caveats. 

Evidence links long-term PPI use to increased risk of strokes, bone fractures, and even chronic kidney disease.

Several renowned institutions conducted the PPI study itself. It looked at over 5,700 people, all aged 45 or above, none of whom had dementia at the beginning. By its end, after adjustments for factors like age and health conditions, the researchers concluded that extended use of PPIs (over 4.4 years) was associated with a higher risk of newly diagnosed dementia.

And here’s more.

Some studies suggest that PPIs can inhibit the production of Nitric Oxide. This is because PPIs can reduce the bioavailability of nitrite, a precursor for NO synthesis in our stomach. When it enters an acidic environment (like our stomach), nitrite can be converted into Nitric Oxide. By reducing stomach acid, PPIs might indirectly impede this conversion, decreasing NO production.

I’m just keeping this new info about PPIs as a mental note. Considering how vital Nitric Oxide is for our overall health, I suggest you note this too.

      Usually the issue is a combination of low stomach acid which happens as we age. The sphincter operates on acid, so when it gets low, it sphincter can’t close. Then the stomach contents go up into your esophagus. That’s the acid reflux.

      A combination of changing your diet from carbs from grains and sugar and alcohol to way more greens and animal and plant proteins (meat, beans and lentils) and plant carbs like sweet potatoes plus taking things like Betaine HCL and enzymes to increase your own acid usually do the trick.

      A functional medicine doctor can coach you through the process. You may also be able to DIY with this book. I trust Jonathan V. Wright’s advice.

      There are also other stomach acid food plans on Amazon. Maybe get a few.

      It’s a diet issue and low stomach acid issue combination. You have to build your acid back and change your diet.

      It’s worth it!!!!
