Is Testosterone Therapy Risky? (Mailbag)

Are there risks to the treatments I suggest?

I recently received an email from a reader concerned about the possible side effects of testosterone therapy. He’s wondering if he should proceed with T treatments after doing his personal research online.

I love that he sent me an email about his concerns. That’s how we all learn. We ask. We do our research, cross-check, and confirm.

Sometimes though, what we absorb can get a little bit out of hand.

You know how it goes. You get curious. You browse the web. One article leads to another. Then you’re overloaded with information that may or may not be relevant to your initial concern.

However, here’s why Testosterone treatments are still a good idea… and why the risks won’t be a problem if you follow the protocol.

Scroll down to read the possible risks and my thoughts about them.

TESTO POWER

Testosterone therapy has various risks. For example, testosterone therapy may:

  • Contribute to sleep apnea — a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts
  • Cause acne or other skin reactions
  • Stimulate noncancerous growth of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and growth of existing prostate cancer
  • Enlarge breasts
  • Limit sperm production or cause testicle shrinkage
  • Increase the risk of a blood clot forming in a deep vein (deep vein thrombosis), which could break loose, travel through your bloodstream and lodge in your lungs, blocking blood flow (pulmonary embolism)

Men with blood clotting issues, congestive heart failure or serious heart issues should not supplement testosterone.

HOWEVER…

When you go to a doctor for possible testosterone replacement, they would first do an assessment of your health and possible risks.

They would ask you about your sleep patterns…

They would not prescribe testosterone replacement if you had high BPH levels…

They would monitor your testosterone levels and response to supplementation….

They would test for you for male aromatase deficiency syndrome.

All of these can be managed by monitoring your levels. One of the reasons I prefer the T creams vs the injections or implants/pellets is that you can drip a little every day instead of giving yourself a big dose that wanes.

When you work with a doctor, make sure they check all of these issues.

One more thing that few people tell you is that if you overdo testosterone, you can get skin tags. If you are getting them, it’s best to take less T.

When you supplement with hormones, you have to have 4-point dried urine tests every six months to a year to monitor the levels. You also have to check in with yourself and how you feel and report it to your doctor so you get the levels that make you feel good. For some guys, just a little T helps, for others, they need to get into the 700 – 1,000 range before they feel like themselves again.

Hormone replacement is both an art and a science that the patient and doctor manage together. It’s not a pill you take, it’s a hormone you use lightly and subtly until you feel great.
